Big Fun for Big Week

by Sister Mary Andrew Budinski

A person reaching the age of 25 has experienced several levels of maturity: infancy, childhood, adolescence, and even a brush with adulthood. To move through those stages gracefully and successfully, one must be accompanied by loving and competent guidance. This is indispensable because of the challenges each level of maturity presents. As one grows, the knowledge of always being the child of one’s parents’ mutates into true wisdom.

When an institution reaches the milestone anniversary of 25 years, there have been similar stages of growth that have not been without challenges. The parent-founders still hold in a proud watchful gaze their dreams which continue to be realized.

As we celebrate the Silver Anniversary of Marywood, we acknowledge the forward vision of the Felician Sisters who added this ministry to their complex in 1991 and expanded it in 2011.

The collaboration of the sisters with the laity from its inception remains as a hallmark of this ministry. On the wings of mission and margin, the Board of Directors continue to make additions of space, services, and personnel to meet the needs Marywood’s long term, short stay, and perspective Residents.

When one enters Marywood, the simplicity and beauty of construction and design envelop the person. The care that Housekeeping, Environmental Services, and Maintenance give to the physical layout is a clarion WELCOME to all guests.

Beyond the physical beauty of the building, there is Marywood’s deeper welcoming reality. It seeks to function not as a facility but as a community, a reality developed over the 25 years of existence. The growth of this hospitable aspect can be attributed to the Employees who serve in administration and direct service since the founding of Marywood. They provide an example and continuity essential to the ministry exercised in the early days and into the present.

The dedication and attentiveness of the Staff at all levels of service embrace each Resident as a precious person, vulnerable to be sure, but deserving of the best care possible. They make every effort to make Residents “at home away from home”, whether that is a transitional reality or a permanent one.

The spiritual underpinnings of the community cannot be underestimated. I do not speak of the Catholic provisions of Mass and Sacraments available daily and upon request. That is a given. I speak of the presence of God that permeates the atmosphere. There are people under this roof of many faiths and religions who pray in many languages and tongues. There are priests, ministers, and rabbis who either resided and/or come to visit and pray with their faithful. There has always been the presence and prayerful support of the Felician Sisters. All bring unseen and untold blessings upon Marywood that make it a very mature 25 year old continuing to draw Residents into its caring and reverent arms.

Congratulations, Marywood! May you continue to grow and mature into a future full of hope!
